I remember feeling much the same about the poor monster. I'm so pleased you verbalized what I incoherently felt about tragedies when I read this book as a child! "A really good tragedy isn't depressing, only because you're blown away by how perfectly it's structured." Yes, that's it exactly. Have you seen a really good performance of Oedipus Rex?
