Well, the disasters are going to happen anyway, and admittedly if I finish the current scene those get closer too. But there is, at least romantic interest in between... (not that that's not a worse threat, to certain of those characters).
The way I came up with an 'epic' was 1) sitting down and making a list of what, extraneous of length, is necessary for one, and trying to riff off of that, and 2) looking at their list of non-verbal epics (no words at all!) and trying to riff off those.
