ashnistrikeOctavia Butler has passed away.
I was lucky enough to see her earlier this year, on her tour for Fledgling. She was funny, and a little shy. It was obvious, when she talked about her work, that she still had many stories left in her. She was very unhappy with the current state of the country and the world, and I wish she could have lived to see things get just a little better.
Shortly after we became friends, Nameseeker gave me Parable of the Sower to read. It was that early stage of a good relationship where you want to share your favorites, and the stories that say the things you believe better than you can. Butler was good at that. Her books are not comfortable reads, but they say things that no one else says, in ways that no one else says them. You want to talk about them afterwards, and share them with people. And I'm sorry there won't be more of them.
