...but mostly small rocks, trying to catch up. I did my course prep through next week. I e-mailed the thesis girl and her advisor, explaining the bits that need changing. I went to the library and discovered that many books by Thorndike are in the catalog, but not on the shelves.

I taught a class of kick-ass undergraduates. They argued at length about how one might find empirical evidence that an organism (like a cat or a human) has internal thought processes. A couple of people brought up interesting experiments, and two of them talked about behavioral markers of dreaming in dogs. (One dog had nightmares and would whimper in its sleep; the other would chase rabbits.) One fellow, who is great for discussions, believes in an absolutely firm boundary between humans and everything else. Or maybe between primates and everything else; the other side of the room managed to talk him down a bit. In any case, it's a point of view that I like having in the class, just like I always need one absolute animal-rights proponent in Intro. Now if I could only get the two types in a class together, I'd never have any trouble keeping the discussion going.

I have switched to Firefox because Explorer was crashing every time I tried to leave Livejournal. I do not know what took me so long. Please don't make fun.

Tomorrow, provided that the situation doesn't completely resolve itself before I wake up, I need to call my senators and let them know that I support a filibuster, and that they should be talking about Alito's desire to turn this country into a monarchy rather than about the fact that he did stupid things in college. Everyone did stupid things in college (not generally stupid racist things, but stupid nevertheless). Not everyone believes that checks and balances are for wimps. Tomorrow night, please ask me whether I did this, and yell at me if I did not. (I also need to track down the phone numbers through WALD or one of the Move-On e-mails, because the senate contact site is down. This is either conspiracy, or overload from oodles of people trying to look up numbers.)

Oh yeah, Thorndike. There's a mysterious rash of Thorndike thefts from the nation's library. It is a puzzlement.

Dogs don't dream of chasing rabbits. That's a fallacy. They're really dreaming of chasing tiny humans. It's a canine racial memory kind of thing, dating back to prehistoric times when giant dogs rules the earth.

gee, I'm feeling so helpful this morning.

But are the thieves thinking about what books to steal, or are they simply using trial and error?
