This is the weird one. I was lucky enough to see Octavia Butler speak at the Chicago Public Library about a month before she died. She was wonderful and brilliant and just coming out of ten years of writer's block with a new novel. (Fledgling. It is excellent, and you should read it.) She was talking about the vampires in her book, and explaining why they didn't produce new vampires by draining blood from humans. "If a black person bites you, you don't wake up the next day African-American!"
I'm sure she didn't intend for anyone in the audience to start thinking, "What if?"
